Philippine official praises China's ruling Communist Party

Mar 20, 2019

BEIJING — The Philippine foreign secretary heaped praise on China's ruling Communist Party during a visit to Beijing on Wednesday, underscoring the growing distance between the Philippines and its ally partner the United States as China's regional political and economic influence rises. Teodoro Locsin said that China's authoritarian one-party system has provided opportunities for developing economies to grow and given them momentum for improvement that Western democracies currently lack. "Without the new China there will be no prospect whatsoever for the developing world to grow into emerging economies," Locsin said. "We would still be as we were throughout the second...

Taiwan, US plan new talks this year in rebuke to Beijing

Mar 20, 2019

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan and the U.S. will hold talks later this year as part of upgraded efforts to counter Beijing's growing pressure on the island for political unification. Christensen didn't say whether the consultations are meant to provoke China or push it to make changes. The U.S. has formal diplomatic relations with China but maintains strong ties with Taiwan though the American Institute in Taiwan, its de facto embassy in Taipei, which has recently...

The initiative aims to expand commerce by building ports, railways and other infrastructure across more than 60 countries from the South Pacific through Asia to Europe and Africa. Projects under the initiative have faced complaints that they leave host countries with too much debt, and with too little work going to local companies....

Mar 20, 2019

BEIJING — China has arrested nearly 13,000 people it describes as terrorists and has broken up hundreds of "terrorist gangs" in Xinjiang since 2014, the government said in a report Monday issued to counter criticism of internment camps and other oppressive security in the traditionally Islamic region. The lengthy report said the government's efforts have curbed religious extremism but gave little evidence of what crimes had occurred. The far northwestern region is closed to outsiders, but former residents and activists abroad say mere expressions of Muslim identity are punished. Criticism has grown over China's internment of an estimated 1 million...
